Next-generation computing

We strive to create innovative materials and discover new possibilities for quantum computers.

LG has conducted research and development of materials informatics (MI) to search, through computer simulations, for future materials that will dramatically enhance product performance, for instance, reducing TV power consumption to a third and increasing electric vehicle mileage fivefold.
LG has also worked on research and development toward the application of quantum computing, which is said to be capable of processing at least 100 million times faster than current computers.

Materials informatics (MI)

The purpose of this research on MI is to promote technological development for a more strategic search for materials, which used to rely on engineers’ intuition, thereby significantly enhancing the efficiency of discovering excellent materials.
A database is built for computational science of physical properties of materials, and cutting-edge machine learning is applied to the database to create a model that predicts physical property values with high accuracy.
Then, from a huge number of candidate materials, those with desired values are efficiently searched for to promote the creation of new materials. This research has already been applied to the development of battery, magnetic, and display materials.

Quantum computing

By applying quantum annealing computers, which originated in Japan, to MI, we have been developing a method that enables innovative development of materials. This practicable development has been being conducted in collaboration with in-house engineers who specialize in materials and external experts in quantum computer hardware.

We have also been considering the development of new application software for quantum computers, including gate-model ones, and are planning to launch a development project for the software.
